First steps once accepted

• Look for accommodation in Modena/Reggio (start before arrival): official housing tips.

• Apply for a Language Tandem partner through the same platform to improve Italian.

• Aeroporto di Bologna: bus diretto fino alla stazione FS, biglietto online 17€, ferma all'autostazione e alla fermata "Modena Vignolese" vicino al campus scientifico.
• Marconi Express: monorotaia per Bologna Centrale (12,80€) + treno regionale verso Modena (4,50€).
• Milano-Bergamo (Orio al Serio): Orio Shuttle per Milano Centrale (biglietto online 10€) + treno per Modena. Per Reggio Emilia valuta anche Italo.

• Bologna Airport: hop on the direct bus to Modena (online ticket is €17, stops at train station, bus station and “Modena Vignolese”).
• Marconi Express: monorail to Bologna Centrale (€12.80), then take a regional train to Modena (€4.50).
• Milan-Bergamo (BGY): bus to Milano Centrale (online ticket is €10) + train connection. Reggio Emilia is also reachable with Italo high-speed trains.

La tessera Unica

Se fai spesso la spola tra Modena e Reggio (più di 7 volte al mese), ti conviene l'abbonamento. Richiedi la Smart Card Unica in biglietteria (servono documento e fototessera). Attenzione: chiedi espressamente che includa l'integrazione per i bus urbani. Costa uguale, ma ti permette di prendere sia i treni tra le due città, sia i bus urbani sia a Modena che a Reggio!

Autobus (SETA)

• Puoi pagare il biglietto contactless a bordo usando le obliteratrici verdi.
• I biglietti cartacei e gli abbonamenti si convalidano sulle obliteratrici grigie.

Treni (Trenitalia vs Italo)

• Regionali: prezzo fisso, utili per le tratte brevi. Se hai un biglietto cartaceo va sempre convalidato prima di salire!
• Alta Velocità (Frecciarossa o Italo): veloci ma costosi. Prenota in anticipo. Italo ha spesso tariffe più basse di Trenitalia.

The ultimate commuter pass (Unica Card)

If you commute between Modena and Reggio often (events will be mostly split between the two cities!), get a monthly train pass on a Unica Smart Card. Go to the train station ticket office in Modena or Reggio Emilia (bring ID & a photo) and make sure to ask for the pass including urban buses. It costs the same but allows you to ride trains between the cities AND also urban buses in both Modena and Reggio for free!

Prices (2026)

• Regional Modena - Reggio train pass: €51/month (unlimited train trips + urban buses).
• Single regional train ticket: €3.70 one-way (buy on the Trenitalia website or app).
• Urban bus ticket: €1.50 one-way (buy on the bus).

Buses (SETA)

• You can tap-to-pay with your bank card on the green machines onboard.
• Paper tickets and subscriptions must be validated on the grey machines.

Trains (Trenitalia vs Italo)

• Regional (Regionali): fixed price, great for short trips (e.g. Modena - Reggio). You can buy tickets on the Trenitalia website. Warning: physical paper tickets must be validated at the station machines before boarding!
• High Speed (Frecciarossa or Italo): extremely fast but expensive. Book in advance. Check Italo website as a competitor to Trenitalia.

• Comprare una bici: È la soluzione migliore. Cerca bici usate (cerca "bici" o "graziella") su Subito.it o Facebook Marketplace. Non comprarne una troppo costosa e compra subito una catena spessa (es. da Decathlon) per evitare furti.

• Bike Sharing: A Reggio Emilia c'è l'app RideMovi. A Modena c'è Centro in Bici (bici gialle), ma le chiavi fisiche sono limitate e c'è una lunghissima lista d'attesa. Meglio l'usato.
• Sui treni: Le biciclette pieghevoli (se piegate) possono essere trasportate gratuitamente sui treni regionali in Emilia Romagna.

• Buying a bike: Highly recommended. Look for cheap, second-hand bikes on Subito.it or Facebook Marketplace. Don't buy a fancy one, and invest in a heavy-duty lock/chain (e.g., at Decathlon) as thefts are common.
• Bike Sharing: Reggio Emilia has the RideMovi app. Modena's public sharing requires a physical key with an endless waitlist, so buying used is much easier.
• Bikes on trains: Foldable bikes can be carried for free on Regional trains across Emilia Romagna.

Posso pagare con la carta?

Sì! Per legge, i commercianti devono accettare pagamenti elettronici per qualsiasi importo. Spesso sentirai usare la parola "POS" o "Bancomat" (che in realtà è un circuito bancario) per riferirsi semplicemente alla carta. Frasi utili: "Pago con la carta" o "Pago in contanti".

Come ordinare al bar

1. Vai al bancone e saluta: "Buongiorno, un macchiato grazie."
2. Bevi il tuo caffè direttamente al bancone (o al tavolo se previsto).
3. Quando hai finito, vai alla cassa e dì cosa hai preso: "Pago un macchiato."
4. Scegli come pagare (carta o contanti), prendi lo scontrino e saluta!

Card or Cash?

Cards are accepted everywhere. By law, shops cannot refuse electronic payments, even for a €1 coffee. Italians often use the word "POS" (the card machine) or "Bancomat" (a national debit network) to refer to card payments. "Pago con la carta" = I pay by card.

Italian Coffee Shop Etiquette

1. Go to the counter and order: "Buongiorno, un macchiato grazie."
2. Drink your coffee standing at the counter.
3. Once finished, walk to the cash register and declare what you had.
4. Pay (card or cash), grab your receipt, say "Grazie, arrivederci" and you're done!
